Our Quest started two years ago when our previous ‘Hot chocolate Maker’ (Kenwood Frothie Deluxe Hot Drinks Maker) died after just one year’s use when the motor burned out.
We started in earnest researching Google for reviews for the best and most reliable ‘Hot Chocolate Maker’ available on the market; but quickly discovered burnt out motors (after just one year’s use) to be a common problem quoted in reviews for a surprisingly large number of Makes and Models of this type e.g. jug above removable base.
If it wasn’t burnt-out motors the jug was too small or the plastic handle was flimsy and would break off easily and so on.
Eventually, after weeks of searching the web we stumbled across the Bialetti Hot Chocolate Maker and Milk Frother which had everything we wanted from a hot drinks maker and more. It had a large jug to make hot and frothy chocolate; it also makes great cappuccino coffee and even cool drinks such as milkshakes.
And all the reviews for the Bialetti were positive with no mention of any major issues or problems by customer reviews or from customers in online blogs.
We had a winner; so we bought one on the strength of our research and have been very pleased with its performance and service since.

The Quest Continues
Having found the Hot Chocolate Maker and Milk Frother for us the quest took a new turn; finding one for the UK Market! They’re readily available on the American market but not in the UK! Buying from America was not an option for us because the wrong voltage e.g. 120v rather than the European voltage of 240v.
So we needed to find a European outlet for this most special of Hot Chocolate Makers. Yes there are Bialetti Hot Chocolate Makers for the UK market sold by Amazon UK but they’re all cheaper versions which are either less suitable e.g. smaller jug or poorer reviews.
After many more weeks searching I found one supplier in Holland (Typical Dutch Stuff) who sold to the European market at the correct voltage; so after checking out the integrity of the company on Google e.g. independent reviews on blog sites and being satisfied of the company’s good status we placed our order and a few weeks later it arrived; along with a free packet of chocolate biscuits because the order was delayed by one week due to supplies problems.
In writing this review I rechecked the web and found that the ‘Typical Dutch Stuff’ no longer supply the Bialetti Hot Chocolate Maker and Milk Frother, instead switching their attention to more recent Models by other manufacturers for coffee makers, and still no sign (other than the cheaper Models on Amazon UK) of any supplies in Europe; although this Model is still readily available in the USA.

Not only is the jug a large capacity 1L but also it makes great hot frothy and creamy drinking chocolate every time, even for the cheap supermarket ‘own’ brands of drinking chocolate that normally never tastes that great. It also makes great cappuccino and optionally cool drinks such as milk shakes.
It’s easy to use, easy to clean, versatile, reliable and sturdy, makes great hot (or cool) drinks every time; and after two years of service still going strong.
How to Use the Bialetti Hot Chocolate Maker and Milk Frother
Simple and Quick
The Bialetti Hot Chocolate Maker and Milk Frother comes with a frother attachment which I have used occasionally but usually find that I don’t need it because even without the frother attachment the Hot Chocolate Maker tends to make the milk very frothy anyway.
To make a hot frothy milk chocolate drink just poor in a couple of cups of milk, add the chocolate powder, about three large scoops e.g. half of what you would normally use if for example you were to make a hot milky drink on the stove or in the microwave because the hot chocolate maker makes the hot milky chocolate drink far more frothy and creamy than would be the case if boiling the milk on the stove or in the microwave.
Also, because the Hot Chocolate Maker makes the hot chocolate drink so frothy and creamy then by adding two cups of milk at the start you’ll end up with three cups at the end; so if you do only want two cups then add less milk at the start and reduce the heating time accordingly e.g. about three minutes.
Once the milk and chocolate powder are added to the jug turn the timer to the required setting e.g. about 4 or 5 minutes (maximum setting 8 minutes).
For cool frothy drinks, add the milk, milk shake powder place the frother attachment in the jug and turn the knob to the required ‘cool’ timer setting. When you place the frother attachment in the milk it will float on the surface but as soon as you turn the ‘cool’ timer on the attachment is sucked to the bottom of the jug and does its stuff to make the cool drink frothy.
For Cappuccino, you could add the coffee in with the milk, but as coffee tends to stain so that it requires a little extra effort to clean the jug afterwards, I found I get just as good results by heating up the milk only in the jug and pouring the hot frothy milk straight into a mug that already has a large teaspoon of instant coffee in the bottom.
The Frother Attachment
And its Benefits
The Bialetti Hot Chocolate Maker froths milk in two different ways dependant on whether you use the frother attachment (shown above) or not, and on which way gives the best results is dependent on the type of hot chocolate used. This I believe will explain why in some reviews I’ve seen a small number of people have been disappointed that they’ve not been able to make their drinks frothy; even though the videos in this article made by me for YouTube clearly show that you can make excellent hot frothy milky chocolate drinks.
Without using the Frother attachment the milky drink is drawn from the top of the jug down the centre to the bottom, like water going down a plughole (as demonstrated in the videos in this article) and in the process air is also drawn down and mixes with the milky drink making it frothy. From my experience this works particularly well with light, white, rich and creamy hot chocolate powder.
With using the Frother attachment, the tube at the top of the attachment sticks out above the top of the milky drink and draws air down to the bottom making darker, heavier and cheaper hot chocolate powder mix very frothy, as shown in the photo below.
Curiously, what works best for one type of hot chocolate powder doesn’t work so well for another, so initially or if trying a new brand or type of hot chocolate powder you might wish to try making your hot chocolate drink with and without the frother attachment and then decide which method of mixing air with the hot chocolate drink works best for the powder you’re currently using.
You can also mix and match the frothing methods, with ease, as the frothing attachment doesn’t fit into anything in the jug but is freestanding and is pulled down and held securely in position purely by suction once the machine is switched on. So you can heat and froth your hot drink without the attachment for the first few minutes and just pop it in for the last couple of minutes to get that final real extra frothiness; which for some of the darker and heavier hot chocolate powder mixes is quite effective. The photo below is a hot frothy milky chocolate drink made is such a way with adding 750ml of milk at the start and ending up with 1000ml of hot frothy chocolate drink that fills two large (one pint) mugs very nicely. You can even use the Frother attachment at the start and halfway through the heating and mixing process just pull the attachment out to let the Hot Chocolate maker continue heating and frothing without the attachment; so it is a very simple and effective attachment to have to hand an use when desired.
The hot chocolate and milk Frother with and without the frother attachment works just as well for making lush frothing cool drinks.

With the Bialetti I found that anything goes, even cheap hot chocolate, as the Bialetti fully mixes and blends the chocolate or cocoa powder into the milk making it hot, creamy and frothy every time.
Consequently you don’t need to use as much as you would use if you were just mixing it in the mug from hot milk boiled on the stove or in the microwave. But obviously the high quality powder mixes are a real treat and guaranteed to give a fulfilling and satisfying hot creamy drink every time.

Making a Banana Milkshake With the Bialetti
Mix Cool and Froth
As well as making hot frothy drinks the Bialetti hot chocolate maker and milk frother machine can also make cool frothy drinks such as milkshakes.
For example you could use Nesquik milkshake powders which when added to milk makes an instant milkshake; three flavours available, Strawberry, Chocolate and Banana. To froth and cool these add the Nesquik milkshake powder and milk to the Bialetti milk frother jug and turn on the machine on the cool setting for a few minutes. Additionally, for a cooler and smoother drink you could also add a scoop or two of ice-cream.
Alternatively, for a quick and equally tasting milkshake, you could use to real bananas instead of the Nesquik milkshake powder (and optionally ice-cream too, if you wish). However, the Bialetti milk frother isn’t capable of handling solids so to use the machine in this way you need to blend the bananas in a blender first.
To make a cool frothy banana milkshake (with real bananas, as illustrated in the slideshow below):-
Take a bunch of bananas, peel them, cut them into small chunks, place the chunks of bananas into a blender and top up with milk to the 1Lt mark and blend for 60 seconds; the more bananas you use the less milk you’ll need e.g. you could use just one or two bananas and use more milk instead. And if you intend using ice-cream make slightly less mix of bananas of milk to compensate so that the total volume including ice-cream (when it’s added) will be no more than 1Lt.
Once blended transfer the contents to the Bialetti milk frother (optionally add one or two scoops of ice-cream), turn on the machine to the cool mix setting for a few minutes to make a cool, smooth and frothy banana milkshake with real bananas.

How Do You Make Your Hot Chocolate?
